IKEA and UNHCR refugee housing, best design of 2016

The emergency housing solution Better Shelter, fruit of the joint work of Ikea and UNHCR, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees; has been recognized with the Big prize in the ninth edition of the Beazley Awards for Best Designs of the Year that recognize the most original designs in six categories: architecture, digital, fashion, graphic, product and transportation).

These 17.5 square meter cabins are designed to accommodate five people and have been equipped with beds and mattresses. They come in two flat packages with the tools and instructions necessary to build them and can be lifted in four hours.

The other 70 projects nominated for the award (for promoting a change, capturing the spirit of the year, improving accessibility and having an innovative design) can be known until February 19 at an exhibition organized at the Design Museum in London.
